Best dining experience so far downtown Overall Food Value Service Atmosphere Just a fantastic restaurant. Great atmosphere, exceptional service (the staff really know the menu inside out). The menu does offer a good choice but I always go for one of the specials. If I could afford it I would dine here one a week! Some good some not so Overall Food Value Service Atmosphere Table for four several nights ago. Very good red pepper soup and Muesli salads. Gnocchi was homemade and very good but in a non-descript sauce. Three of us had the most beautiful pieces of Halibut I have ever seen - easily 8cm x 8cm x 5cm to 6cm high, sadly they were over-cooked and dry - a tragedy/travesty of the first order. Comparing notes with friends who ate there two weeks ago and they had the same experience with the halibut. Fantastic Restaurant Overall Food Value Service Atmosphere I lived in St. John's for a year, and traveled back and forth every two months for another two years. I frequented this restaurant approximately 20 times over this time period and found the food was fantastic every single time. My husband is a very fussy eater and when I finally got him to agree to join me at Magnum and Stein, he quietly leaned over during the dinner to tell me that I was absolutely right. He said that the food was terrific! Yes the "guy" downstairs is not all warm and fuzzy but to not eat there because of that......well it is a shame actually as you missed out big time on very good food and service, upstairs. My last visit!! Overall Food Value Service Atmosphere We entered the downstairs area and were greeted by no one. We (all 5 of us) then headed upstairs to the dining room only to be received by an abrupt "You need to see the guy downstairs!" Having informed this server that there was no one there, we proceeded to go back downstairs where we were, I would like to say greeted; however, I feel addressed may be more appropriate. The "guy" downstairs said he was in the washroom when we arrived. He assured me we had no reservation and they had no space. His entire demeanor indicated that our business was not really needed nor appreciated. On previous visit we were treated in a similar manner by the "guy" but the service and food upstairs seemed to compensate for it. But there are many other restaurants in the area where service is much more important and deserve my patronage. Too bad, the potential is here!!! Ratings are from my previous visit but; needless to say, are not consistent. Most of the staff don't get a chance to have their performance evaluated. Absolute gros! Overall Food Value Service Atmosphere I phoned last evening from Ontario to simply pass on my best wishes to a friend who was to have dinner at the restaurant. The person at the front desk answered in such a haughty voice that I was stunned. I experience raw arrogance, dismissiveness, and a quit-bothering-me attitude. I have never been to this restaurant; I don't care how good their food might be. I simply wouldn't step foot in such an atmosphere. The receptionist tells the world what kind of place it is. No thank you. Keep you arrogance, officious attitude, and we're-better-than-everyone-else silly posture. I would fire this person. If this person is the owner, I hope the community fires him by not eating there at all. Vote with your feet! Turned away Overall Food Value Service Atmosphere Not once but twice - this time on a Wednesday night in January. It is not that they did not have a table, the reason they did not want our business was because they had a couple of large tables seated around the same time. I will never go back, unbelievable! One of the best Overall Food Value Service Atmosphere Magnum's has to be one of the best restaurants in town,not only for it's great food and service but for it's exciting but warm ambience and patrons. I'm usually there about twice a month for dinner and many more times for drinks after work at the bar and I always have a great time and meet some great people. The food is on par with some of the best in Canada that I've been to. If you go, try the Prawns in a Black Rum & Lime to start and the tenderloin for a main - you won't be disappointed!
